The Sinhala - Tamil New Year Celebration

The Sinhala - Tamil New Year Festival organized by the Students Union of Faculty of InformationTechnolgy, University of Moratuwa

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration with a grand festival titled “Sarasawiyayi Kowul Nadayi”(සරසවියයි කොවුල් නදයි) was held on the 28th March 2013. Dean , Faculty of Information Technology D.K.Withanage graced the occasion as the chief guest. As early as 7am , enthusiastic students started trooping to the lagaan, university grounds to witness an array of programmes lined up for the day-long event organised by the Faculty of Information Technology Students Union.




Fostering the nation's cultural values on all occasions, Students of Faculty of Information Technology celebrated this festival with their fellow university students and batch mates from diverse cultural backgrounds in equal enthusiasm, as this being an ideal platform to showcase the national unity.


The event started with welcoming the guest, lighting of the oil lamp, Kiri ithirewima and the welcome speech. The New Year celebrations comprised with traditional delicacies, games and cultural shows added a pleasing view to the eyes of all. Participants displayed their eagerness in engaging traditional games showcasing the unity and joy of New Year festive. Among the traditional entertainments, Pillow fight, Tug of War, Avrudu kumari and Keeping eye to Mora(Shark) took the impression of the audience being eye-catching competitions. Staff members adjudged the winners and were rewarded with gifts by the chief guests. The celebrations went on well into the night live entertainment and performances.
